Zemi Idol in Jadeite 42 cm 10th to 15th Century AR

Description

Large Taíno zemí carved from mottled green stone, depicting a powerful anthropomorphic figure with deeply hollowed eyes, broad facial features, open mouth and elaborate incised headdress. The figure is shown in a compact squatting posture characteristic of Taíno ritual imagery associated with ancestral spirits and deities. An imposing and highly decorative example with a naturally polished green surface.
